Fried Chicken Sandwiches at Bakesale Betty

On my first visit to the Temescal neighborhood in North Oakland the very first place I was taken for a bite was Bakesale Betty. It is the first place you should go if you come for a visit.

Bakesale Betty makes the most amazing baked goods. They are not fancy or adventurous, just very very good. The cookies for example rival my mother's. Listen dear reader(s): you all probably think that your mothers make really lovely cookies and tell them that theirs are the best. This is all very sweet of you as it would hurt your mother's feelings to tell her otherwise. I'll put this as gently as I can: all of your mothers make puny, flavorless, throw away cookies. Since you will likely never try my mother's cookies, find a good excuse to skip your mom's cookies and go to Bakesale Betty. Words do not describe how great they are. They're better than any you've ever sampled. If you're not in the mood for cookies, no matter. There's lots more to try.

On the final afternoon of 2008, I ventured to Bake Sale Betty with a small band of hungry people to consume the highly regarded fried chicken sandwiches. These things are famous, with the good and bad citizens from all over the bay venturing to the corner of 51st and Telegraph to wait in a very long line. Patient diners will be rewarded with a great sandwich, and maybe even a cookie for their trouble.

Practicing self control is a good idea at BSB, for how else can you expect to sample all that there is to offer? We started with the famous Chicken sandwiches. Rumor has it, just one of these little darlings, smothered with a lovely coleslaw, has nearly 10,000 calories.

We all shared sandwiches to make room for a stack of my favorite ginger cookies and a slice of the fresh baked apple pie. Seeing as this was possibly the last day before the rapture, we stuffed ourselves without regard to our health. It was worth it.

The world's still here (for now) so go on down to Bakesale Betty before this economy makes this cheap and excellent bakery out of all of our price range.

Dude, I've had your mom's cookies. No, not like that. I mean, one time, at two in the morning, we came back to your house and your mom gave me cookies. I think they were good, but I honestly don't remember.

I have had your mom's cookies many times...sober even, and they are the shit! Just as good as mine :) These must bee awesome!! Ever been to Buena Vista Cafe? I know it's uber cheesy, but my great Uncle Jack Koepler had a hand in establishing the Irish Coffee there...I've heard it's really good :) Check it out for me!!

Maybe we're getting old, or maybe we were just drunk that night. Some other time perhaps.

Wow your great uncle had something to do with that place huh? It's actually directly across the street from my work. My folks went there recently and I've given lost groups of foreigners directions there on occasion. Come visit and we'll go.
