Snack #31: Sakoo sai moo

Tapioca balls with pork, peanuts, and sugar.

Happened upon these morsels in Thonburi, just across the river from Bangkok proper. The food is better in Thonburi and this snack was no exception.

Topped with toasted garlic, this snack is pretty sweet. Wrap 'em up in lettuce and a bit of cilantro.

Snack #30: Snack Party!

Too many snacks, too few days. Today turned into a snack party. First stop was bubble tea across from work.

Next it was to a Salapbao Stand. We got ones filled with cream.

Last Stop was an assorted cake stand. They sell things made of rice, coconut, egg, etc.
We got an assorted bag with: little pancakes, sticky rice cakes, coconut cakes which tasted kind of like macaroons. The Salapbao is also pictured

Snack #29: Satay

Well, hello. Here's a satay stand. It's more of a southern thing really. Not particularly common where I live, but easy enough to find if you desire.

Here's the lowdown: You order a few to a few dozen of these sticks. You get a bag of cucumbers and onions in a sweet dressing, and most importantly, a plastic bag full of peanut sauce. This is the very sauce that is associated with Thai food back home, but this is the ONLY thing I've ever had it with, and it just so happens to be heavily influenced by Malaysian cuisine. Not typical at all, but good nonetheless.

Snack #27: Waffle

Waffles are a common street snack for some reason. I guess people like them here. The worst snack I ever had was a waffle on a stick, with a sausage inside. I bought two waffles from this cart; one with corn, the other with raisins. The real reason I snacked here, besides for the sake of this project, was that this vendor is my regular guy for buying prepared fruit (see mango with chili and fish sauce). It just so happens he also has a waffle cart.

Snack #26: Ice Cream Sandwich

Snack #25: Sticky Rice With Taro

Here's a grilled sticky rice stand. You have a few choices: sticky rice with banana, black bean, or Taro. Taro is my personal favorite. It should be yours as well.

Snack #23: More Desserts

If it isn't apparently obvious, Thai people aren't afraid of desserts. Well, here's a favorite local dessert cart.

There's quite a spread here. Sweet mung beans, tapioca with corn and fresh coconut, bananas in coconut milk, taro in black rice, and more. The all come with a healthy splash of salty coconut milk.

I recomend anything with tapioca.

The black rice and taro was also good tonight.

Snack #22: Mango and Sticky Rice

Here's a mango and sticky rice stand. I pass this stand daily, but this was my first visit. It won't be my last.

Here's what you get:
Sticky Rice, Coconut Milk, etc
This is sticky rice with a bag of salty coconut milk and some toasted rice. The rice is sweet and the mango is sweet, so trust me, you don't need sweet coconut milk on top of that.
Here's the mango. This is the best thing I've eaten all day. Maybe I'll skip dinner. Come to think of it, calorie wise I ought to.

Snack #21: Fry Bread and Green Stuff

Fry bread and soy milk is a very common Thai breakfast. It's one I eat on occasion. Problem is, it is really only of snack size so does not stick with me until lunch time. On this day all they had to go with the bread was this green stuff. It's got the consistency of pudding, but pudding it is not. I do believe it is colored and flavored with pandan. It is sweet, but not too sweet. With the slightly salty bread, it is quite good.

Here's a classy snack. Luk Choup. It's made from sweetened mung beans. It's quite labor intensive and not very cheap. If Isaan sausage and broke man pancake feed the working class, this feeds royalty.

Snack #18: Balls on a Stick

One of the most common street snacks: Assorted meat balls. On a stick.
I asked for shrimp balls but ended up with pork I believe. I think large intestines must have been used in the making of these particular balls because that is what they tasted like.

I expected coconut flavor, as is the norm, but got vanilla. I'm not complaining. It was the best thing I'd had since dinner. The nice lady offered to put egg on as a condiment. I opted for sticky rice and some kind of palm fruit/jelly (I think).

Snack #15: Assorted Desserts on Bike

I felt kind of bad for waking this guy up, but it seemed like just the right thing and I was hungry. I had already passed up fish cakes, squids on sticks, assorted meatballs, mystery fruits, assorted beverages, and other things before I found this just a couple blocks from home.

Snack #14: Coconut Jellies

There are many styles of Thai snack. I have been eating both new and old style snacks for this month. My favorites are and will always be the old style. As Thailand develops and convenience foods make inroads, the old style snacks get pushed out. In Bangkok, or at least in my neighborhood, these roving vendors with their baskets are less common than they were just a few years ago.

Snack #12: Thai Iced Tea

Here's a common sight. A tea and coffee stand!


I like to watch the tea and coffee being made in front of me. Problem is, watching makes me not want to have one ever again. Spoonful after spoonful of sugar is added as well as sweetened condensed milk. After the hot tea is poured over ice, evaporated milk is added. It's a bit rich, but hits the spot when the time is right. It's good hot too.
