Fun a Day 2009

Things have been quiet around here. January of '07 and '08 brought us Snack a Day, but this year something else has kept me busy instead. This blog was started accidentally by taking part in the excellent Fun a Day project. The idea is to do something artistic every day for the month of January. My original project was certainly hedonistic but questionably artistic.

This year I did something totally unrelated to food. I decided to have fun by taking pictures of small things in and around my home with the help of a borrowed macro lens. Thanks Hilary! I hope you like them. If not, that's okay as these shots certainly caused me a lot of cursing.

If you're still here and still interested in this project and many others like it, you can visit the Fun a Day show on February 28th in
San Francisco at Queen's Nails in the Mission. I'll be there with my little pictures. Hope to see you there!

Fried Chicken Sandwiches at Bakesale Betty

On my first visit to the Temescal neighborhood in North Oakland the very first place I was taken for a bite was Bakesale Betty. It is the first place you should go if you come for a visit.

Bakesale Betty makes the most amazing baked goods. They are not fancy or adventurous, just very very good. The cookies for example rival my mother's. Listen dear reader(s): you all probably think that your mothers make really lovely cookies and tell them that theirs are the best. This is all very sweet of you as it would hurt your mother's feelings to tell her otherwise. I'll put this as gently as I can: all of your mothers make puny, flavorless, throw away cookies. Since you will likely never try my mother's cookies, find a good excuse to skip your mom's cookies and go to Bakesale Betty. Words do not describe how great they are. They're better than any you've ever sampled. If you're not in the mood for cookies, no matter. There's lots more to try.

On the final afternoon of 2008, I ventured to Bake Sale Betty with a small band of hungry people to consume the highly regarded fried chicken sandwiches. These things are famous, with the good and bad citizens from all over the bay venturing to the corner of 51st and Telegraph to wait in a very long line. Patient diners will be rewarded with a great sandwich, and maybe even a cookie for their trouble.

Practicing self control is a good idea at BSB, for how else can you expect to sample all that there is to offer? We started with the famous Chicken sandwiches. Rumor has it, just one of these little darlings, smothered with a lovely coleslaw, has nearly 10,000 calories.

We all shared sandwiches to make room for a stack of my favorite ginger cookies and a slice of the fresh baked apple pie. Seeing as this was possibly the last day before the rapture, we stuffed ourselves without regard to our health. It was worth it.

The world's still here (for now) so go on down to Bakesale Betty before this economy makes this cheap and excellent bakery out of all of our price range.

Now I'm Two

Today Dish a Day is two years old. While 2007 and 2008 both started off with Snack a Day, I decided that I cannot continue the project in America. There just aren't that many snacks to be had and perhaps more importantly, Snack a Day America would very likely ruin my health. I think I'll cook instead. Maybe I'll skip the snacks all together and get some exercise. Just as soon as this terrible headache goes away. Happy New Year to most of you.
